Steve Addazio is wasting little time in replenishing offensive play-caller duties at Colorado State.
Per multiple sources, Addazio is planning to hire Wisconsin assistant Jon Budmayr away from his alma mater to run the Rams' offense. The hire could become official as soon as today.
Addazio found himself in need of a new offensive coordinator after just one season atop the Rams' program when late last week first-year Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea snagged Joey Lynch away from Colorado State to serve as an offensive assistant for the Commodores.
In Budmayr, Addazio – who rose through the coaching ranks himself as an offensive assistant and turned a two-year stint as Florida's offensive coordinator into what now is an head coaching career entering its 11th season – plucks a keen young offensive mind from the Big Ten.
A former quarterback for the Badgers, Budmayr had been on staff at Wisconsin for the past six seasons and just completed his third campaign as Wisconsin's quarterbacks coach.
Budmayr helped the Badgers as a player to win the 2010 Big Ten title and in 2019 helped coach Wisconsin to a 10-win season that included a berth opposite Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game.
The truncated COVID-19 season prevented Addazio from a full debut campaign in 2020; the Rams were just 1-3 in their four-game set.
Budmayr inherits an offense that struggled to score in its transition season from the Mike Bobo era that ended after the 2019 campaign into the onset of the Addazio era. The Rams averaged just 22 points per game and the only time last season in which they topped 30 was the team's 34-24 upset-win against Wyoming.
