Derek Mason continues to assemble quite the first staff atop the MTSU Blue Raiders football program.
Now, sources tell FootballScoop, Mason is adding a former star Penn State player who spent this past season on James Franklin's Nittany Lions staff.
Calvin Lowery is heading to Murfreesboro to coach MTSU's running backs for Mason, sources tell FootballScoop.
A former Penn State star who became a fourth-round NFL Draft pick and spent time with four different NFL franchises across five seasons of pro ball, Lowery had been an offensive analyst and analytics coordinator for Penn State in 2023.
He also has a decade of experience as an Football Bowls Subdivision assistant coach.
After a brief stint at the prep level, Lowery broke into collegiate coaching with a three-year run as an assistant at Power 5 Big 12 program Baylor. He filled out his first decade in collegiate coaching with a long tenure at Tulsa, where he coached both wideouts and helped run the Golden Hurricane's special teams units.
Mason was hired to revive MTSU late last year, taking over for Rick Stockstill after Stockstill's 17-year run came to an end.
The Blue Raiders open the Mason era Aug. 31 at home against FCS program Tennessee Tech before traveling a week later to face Lane Kiffin's Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford, Mississippi.
