Eddie George helped guide Tennessee State to a major step forward in 2023, with the Tigers winning six games and upsetting nationally ranked Gardner-Webb along the way.
George, the former Ohio State Heisman Trophy-winning running back and multi-time Pro Bowler with the Tennessee Titans, now is looking to keep the momentum moving forward with some difficult staff changes on his TSU staff.
Sources tell FootballScoop that the Tigers are expected to part with offensive coordinator Theron Aych and offensive line coach Anthony Lewis.
Alongside up-and-coming Tennessee State Athletics Director Mikki Allen, a former national title-winning football player for the Tennessee Vols, George & Co. have rallied support and built momentum for the Tigers' program within Nashville and the Midstate area.
The Tigers have noticed improved attendance and interest since Allen hired George to run his TSU program, and this season's six-win campaign marked the program's most in six years.
Moreover, it's just the third winning program in the past decade for Tennessee State, an HBCU program with a passionate base.
The Tigers' defense carried it through much of the 2023 campaign; the unit held six of 10 FCS opponents to 20 or fewer points.
Additionally, Allen and George teamed to help considerably raise the TSU profile with an historic September matchup at Notre Dame -- the first time the Fighting Irish had hosted an FCS or HBCU program.
That game featured George and Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman as head coaches -- both minorities and Ohio State alums.
Additionally, George carved out time the day before the game to help spearhead a panel on diversity inside Notre Dame's famed Mendoza College of Business that was organized by Irish Executive Associate Athletics Director JP Abercrumbie.
George's TSU program is set to confront one of its stiffest FCS challenges to date in the opening weeks of the 2024 season, when the Tigers are scheduled to play at perennial powerhouse North Dakota State.
