Sources: Elko emerges as Texas A&M's choice (Texas A&M)

A wild 24 hours in College Station, Texas -- and across college football -- is seemingly drawing to a conclusion -- again, for the Aggies.

Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Texas A&M is working to finalize a deal with Mike Elko, the former Aggies defensive coordinator and second-year Duke head coach.

Elko has guided the Blue Devils to instant success in his first two seasons as a head coach, leading them to the postseason after both the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

The Aggies had zeroed in on Kentucky's Mark Stoops and late Friday into Saturday, the two sides entered into earnest negotiations for a deal to make Stoops the replacement for Jimbo Fisher.

A fan revolt, among other factors, halted that process and Aggies A.D. Ross Bjork shifted quickly to circle back around with Elko, who previously served at Texas A&M on Jimbo Fisher's staff.

Owing Fisher some $77 million on his record buyout, the Aggies also will be on the hook for $5 million to pry Elko away from Duke, sources with direct knowledge told FootballScoop.

Multiple outlets are reporting that the Aggies are presently working to finalize the deal with Elko.
