Tre Lamb's climb is set to take another step.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Lamb is expected to be the next head coach at FCS program ETSU.
The Johnson City, Tennessee-based school had sought a new coach since leaders had bungled the end of just a two-year stay at the helm for George Quarles.
In Lamb, the Bucs are poised to get a coach fresh off back-to-back FCS Playoff appearances from Lamb's work at Gardner-Webb, which in 2022 advanced into the second round of the FCS Playoffs.
The Runnin' Bulldogs lost last Saturday at Mercer to end their 2023 season.
Sources told FootballScoop that ETSU, with veteran athletics administrator David Blackburn running point on the search, talked with Will Healy, former NFL head coach Jeff Fisher and myriad other candidates for the position.
Additionally, sources said that Lamb had been the target of Tennessee Tech's search and also had been linked to the post at the University of West Georgia.
Lamb already has Tennessee ties. A former standout quarterback in high school for his father, Hal Lamb, a legendary Georgia prep coach, Tre Lamb shined at Tennessee Tech.
Lamb met directly Sunday with ETSU officials, including president Brian Noland, whose school desperately needs some stability in its athletics program after a spate of hirings and firings that includes not only its last football coach but also a recent volleyball coach, among others.
He later returned to his alma mater as offensive coordinator, which served as the springboard to Lamb's start as a head coach at G-W.
His uncle is Bobby Lamb, head coach at NCAA Division II program Anderson University, and his cousin is Taylor Lamb, quarterbacks coach at the University of Virginia and former star Appalachian State quarterback..
