After turning around Prairie View A&M with a 20-14 that vaulted him into position for the head job at Southern University, Eric Dooley now is out after just two seasons at the helm of the Jaguars.
Sources told FootballScoop Monday that Southern University, the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, school and HBCU program, had parted with Dooley after just 22 games.
Dooley generated a 7-5 2022 campaign and played for the SWAC title -- where his Southern squad was blown out by Deion Sanders and Jackson State in what proved to be the day Coach Prime was revealed to be Colorado's next head coach.
This year Southern has struggled to a 5-5 slate and dropped each of its last two games, a stretch that included a blowout-loss Nov. 4 against rival Alcorn State.
Dooley played at Grambling State University under iconic coach Eddie Robinson, and Dooley earlier in his coaching career served as an assistant coach at Southern for some 14 seasons -- during which time the program won multiple SWAC titles and two HBCU national championships.
Before finally breaking through to earn his first head coaching opportunity at Prairie View A&M in 2018, Dooley previously gained notoriety as a coordinator of the high-flying offenses at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Grambling State.
Tuesday afternoon update> After both the University and coach Dooley stated Monday this had not yet happened, the University has now announced this change. Assistant head coach Terrence Graves will serve as interim head coach. FootballScoop is told Southern is planning to hire their next head coach from outside of this staff.
