Houston is planning to hire former Texas cornerbacks coach Jay Valai, sources told FootballScoop on Tuesday. While the hire is not complete, we are told Valai is in Houston at this time.
A Euless, Texas, native, Valai spent one season at Texas and one as the cornerbacks coach at Rutgers, working under the wing of his college coordinator Chris Ash at both spots.
Valai is relatively new to coaching, having spent six years as a professional trainer working with NFL and NBA clients. He spent 2016-17 as a quality control coach at Georgia and 2018 in a similar role with the Kansas City Chiefs.
He tweeted farewell to his Texas players last week.
,Valai is expected to fill the hole left when Houston dismissed defensive coordinator Joe Cauthen on Tuesday. Safeties coach Doug Belk was promoted to defensive coordinator.
As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
