Sources: Lance Guidry a top candidate for Marshall defensive coordinator job (Marshall)

Charles Huff is working on bringing an accomplished defensive play caller to Marshall, who had one of the top defenses in college football under former defensive coordinator Brad Lambert, who has since left for Purdue.

Sources tell FootballScoop that new Marshall head coach Charles Huff is targeting Lance Guidry for his defensive coordinator post.

Pete Thamel is reporting the same this afternoon.

Guidry, a former FootballScoop Coordinator of the Year finalist in 2015, is currently the safeties coach at Florida Atlantic, but has an impressive resume as a defensive play caller.

Heading into their bowl game following the 2010 season, while the defensive backs coach at Miami (OH), Guidry took over as interim head coach following the departure of head coach Mike Haywood and led the team to a win in the GoDaddy.com Bowl over MTSU. From there, he landed the defensive coordinator job at Western Kentucky (2011-12), where in his second season the Hilltoppers had the top defense in the league and a top 30 defense nationally. Guidry was once again tabbed as the interim head coach when Willie Taggart decided to leave for the head coaching job at USF.

From 2013-15, Guidry served as the assistant head coach / defensive coordinator at McNeese State (FCS - LA) and in 2015 his defense helped paved the way for a dominant undefeated regular season where they ranked in the top 10 in a number of categories.

He took over as head coach of the program in 2015 following the departure of Matt Viator for Louisiana Monroe and went 6-5 in year one, 9-2 in year two, and 6-5 in year three before the school announced in November of 2018 that his contract was not being renewed.

He spent the 2019 season as the defensive coordinator at Southeastern Louisiana (FCS) before catching on at FAU this past season.

Including his two stints as an interim head coach, Guidry is 22-13 as a head coach, and now Huff may now have a veteran defensive play caller on the hook prepared to step into one of the best defensive situations in college football, and certainly one of the best among the Group of Five.

Wednesday afternoon update> Sources tell FootballScoop Huff is also planning to hire UT Martin co-defensive coordinator Dominique Bowman. Bowman's position group will be in the secondary sources tell FootballScoop.
