Sources: Mack Brown, North Carolina adding former FCS special teams coordinator Nick Newsome (Nick Newsome)

Nick Newsome, who has previous ACC experience from time at Georgia Tech and also learned under FCS coaching veteran Jason Simpson at UT Martin, is joining the staff at North Carolina, FootballScoop has learned.

Newsome is set to join Mack Brown's Tar Heels program as an analyst; specifically, Newsome is going to work with North Carolina's defensive backs, sources tell FootballScoop.

The former special teams coordinator at Gardner-Webb under Tre Lamb, Newsome helped the Bulldogs repeat as Big South Conference champions in 2023. Lamb guided the Bulldogs to consecutive FCS Playoffs appearances in 2022-23 before taking over at ETSU.

Newsome, who played collegiately at FCS program Austin Peay, has coached at Western Carolina and Hampton, in addition to his time at Gardner-Webb, Georgia Tech and UT Martin.

North Carolina, which lost its final three games during an 8-5 2023 campaign, opens its 2024 season in a primetime, national TV affair at PJ Fleck's Big Ten program Minnesota Aug. 29.

The Tar Heels then host three consecutive non-conference games against Charlotte, North Carolina Central and James Madison before initiating ACC play Sept. 28 on the road at Duke and first-year coach Manny Diaz.
