Sources: Manny Diaz expected to be next head coach at Duke

Manny Diaz is expected to be the next head coach at Duke, sources told FootballScoop. A deal is expected to be finalized today sources share.

Duke represents Diaz's second ACC head coaching position. He went 21-15 at Miami from 2019-21, including a 16-9 mark in ACC play. Diaz's Hurricanes lost to the Blue Devils in 2019 but scored wins by a combined score of 95-10 in 2020-21.

Diaz has spent the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Penn State. The Nittany Lions have finished fifth and first in yards per play with him in charge; Penn State's current mark of 3.91 is the lowest by an FBS team since 2012 Florida State.

Diaz inherits a Duke program on the upswing. Mike Elko left for Texas A&M after going 16-9 in two seasons, and this season's 7-5 record would've been better had quarterback Riley Leonard not suffered an ankle injury in a close loss to Notre Dame. Leonard is currently in the transfer portal but has not announced a new destination.

Prior to Miami, Diaz ran defenses at Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, Texas and Louisiana Tech. He spent 1998-2005 in the ACC as a GA and a position coach at Florida State and NC State.
