Sources: Former FBS coordinator to join East Carolina staff (matt mattox)

Matt Mattox is expected to become East Carolina's offensive line coach, sources told FootballScoop on Thursday.

Mattox is a former offensive coordinator at McNeese, and previously coached O-lines while holding run game coordinator or co-offensive coordinator duties at Bowling Green, Tulsa, Texas, South Florida and UTSA.

A former tight end and offensive tackle at Butler Community College and Houston, Mattox entered coaching as a strength and conditioning assistant at Houston in 2005. His first O-line job came at Butler CC in 2007, and after five years there he moved to Coffeyville CC and then to Eastern Illinois, where in 2013 he helped Sterlin Gilbert win the FootballScoop FCS Coordinator of the Year award.

That success took Mattox to the FBS level at Bowling Green in 2014.

In eight seasons at the FBS level, every Mattox offense has averaged at least 28 points per game.

East Carolina ranked fifth-to-last in FBS in 2023 at 17.3 points per game. The Pirates finished 113th in rushing at 113.3 yards per game, 109th at 3.53 per carry, and 112th at 6.92 tackles for loss allowed per game. Overall, ECU was 132nd of 133 FBS teams at 4.3 yards per play. The Pirates finished 2-10 under fifth-year head coach Mike Houston.

Houston and Pirates offensive coordinator Donnie Kirkpatrick β€œmutually agreed to part ways and go in a different direction offensively at the conclusion of the season." Allen Mogridge coached ECU's offensive line in 2023.

Ole Miss co-offensive coordinator/tight ends coach John David Baker was introduced as ECU's new offensive coordinator earlier this week.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
