Sources: Mercer to hire Youngstown's Jahmal Brown to fill defensive coordinator role (Naval Academy)

Mercer football continues its staff rebuild following the departure of former head coach Drew Cronic to take over the offense at the Naval Academy.

And sources tell FootballScoop that Mercer and new coach Mike Jacobs have their next defensive coordinator.

Jahmal Brown, who for the past three seasons helped run the defense at tradition-rich FCS program Youngstown State, is exiting the Penguins program to take over the Bears defense, several sources tell FootballScoop.

Aside from the past three seasons at Youngstown and starting his career off at his alma mater, Brown brings with him experience from time on the defensive staff at Saginaw Valley State as well as Notre Dame College.

A former defensive back at Bowling Green, Brown's career in coaching showcases a specialization in coaching his former position group.

This move also is a reunion of sorts, as Brown and Jacobs previously worked together at NCAA Division II program Lenoir-Rhyne.

Mercer has found its past two head coaches at Lenoir-Rhyne; it hired away Cronic from the Hickory, North Carolina, program and turned back to a familiar spot to land Jacobs upon Cronic's departure earlier this month.
