Sam Houston defensive coordinator Skyler Cassity is expected to take the same job at North Texas, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Tuesday. Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports first reported the news.
A 2016 Auburn graduate, Cassity is in his fifth season as a full-time, on-field coach and third as a defensive coordinator. The 2024 campaign was his first at Sam after spending 2022-23 in the same role at Abilene Christian.
Prior to ACU, Cassity started coaching as an undergrad at Auburn. He was a GA at Texas State and Texas Tech before becoming the nickels and safeties coach at Missouri State from 2020-21.
Sam Houston currently ranks 15th nationally in yards per play allowed at 4.75 and 21st in scoring at 20.1 points per outing. In the process, the Bearkats improved from 3-9 to 9-3. SHSU head coach KC Keeler took the Temple job earlier this week.
North Texas fired defensive coordinator Matt Caponi earlier this month. The Mean Green secured a bowl berth in head coach Eric Morris's second season while ranking 121st nationally at 34.5 points per game allowed.
