Sources: Ohio planning to promote John Hauser to DC (Spence Nowinsky)

On the heels of back to back 10-win seasons and after losing incumbent defensive coordinator Spence Nowinsky to Memphis, Ohio is set to turn within to find its next defensive play-caller.

Several sources tell FootballScoop that John Hauser is being promoted by Tim Albin as the Bobcats' new defensive coordinator to replace Nowinsky, following his exit last week to Ryan Silverfield's Tigers program.

Previously the program's defensive pass game coordinator and safeties coach, Hauser is being elevated on the heels of three years in the Ohio program.

Hauser's arrival at Ohio came following an eight-year run at MAC rival Miami (Ohio); he also carries with him experience in a recruiting personnel role at FBS Power 5 program Illinois, as well as Southern Conference program The Citadel.

Hauser's promotion allows flexibility to hire the best possible coach to fill the remaining vacancy on staff. Sources expect that hire to be identified in the next week or two.

The Bobcats wrap their spring camp April 20 with the program's annual intrasquad exhibition; Ohio then initiates its 2024 season Aug. 31 at ACC program Syracuse, which is under the direction of new head coach Fran Brown.
