Sources: Paul Chryst expected to remain at Texas (Paul Chryst)

Paul Chryst, a veteran coach with a long history as a noted offensive coordinator and with head coaching stints at both Pittsburgh and Wisconsin, is expected to remain on Steve Sarkisian's Texas staff, several sources told FootballScoop Monday.

Chryst, an 86-game winner as a collegiate head coach who finished his Wisconsin run 41 games over .500 before he was abruptly fired in 2022, has been approached about multiple potential job opportunities this offseason.

Most recently, Chryst was widely viewed as one of the top targets for the Iowa Hawkeyes's vacant offensive coordinator position under coach Kirk Ferentz.

The Hawkeyes fired Brian Ferentz late in the 2023 season after the team's offense struggled in record proportions for the second-straight year; Iowa was shut out of its Citrus Bowl loss to Tennessee.

Chryst has been a special assistant to Sarkisian with the Longhorns since May 2023. He was paid an approximately $11 million buyout after he was forced out of the job at his alma mater, where Chryst had been a quarterback for the Badgers in mid-1980s.

Texas just advanced to the College Football Playoff for the first time in the 10-year history of the event, falling by six points to eventual CFP national runner-up Washington. Chryst has been instrumental in the acclamation of Texas backup quarterback Arch Manning. "They're close," Cooper Manning said of his son's relationship with Chryst last month.

The Longhorns are set to transition into the SEC this fall. They are schedule to open their 2024 season Aug. 31 at home against Colorado State, travel to national champion Michigan the next week and then have their first game as an SEC member Sept. 28 at home against Mississippi State.
