After eight consecutive winning seasons among nine overall at the helm, Dawson Odums is on his way out at Southern University.
He's the top target of another HBCU program seeking to recapture its success on the gridiron.
The veteran head coach, sources told FootballScoop, has elected to explore other opportunities after finishing the Jaguars' spring season with a 5-1 slate that culminated with Saturday's 49-7 win against Grambling State University in the 47th annual Bayou Classic.
Per sources, Odums is expected to agree to a six year contract to become the new head coach at Norfolk State.
Another college football source told FootballScoop that Odums was set to receive a six-year deal worth more than $225,000 annually to take over the Norfolk State program.
After initiating his tenure at Southern U. with a 4-5 record in 2012, won seven or more games in six of the next eight seasons and then dropped only a 33-30 decision to Arkansas-Pine Bluff during this six-game spring campaign.
The Spartans, who did not participate in a spring season, are seeking a replacement for the popular Latrell Scott. A Virginia native, Scott left the program earlier this spring for a spot on the staff at East Carolina.
Odums is a North Carolina native who played his college ball at North Carolina Central.
He's had previous coaching stints atop high school and collegiate programs. Odums was an assistant at Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern, Bethune-Cookman and North Carolina A&T.
Norfolk State is scheduled to open its 2021 fall season against rival Virginia State in the Labor Day Classic Sept. 5 at Price Stadium in Norfolk.
