South Alabama hires Major Applewhite

Update >> South Alabama has announced the hire.

Pete Thamel shares he has agreed to a five-year deal.

South Alabama lost Kane Wommack to the opportunity to join Kalen DeBoer's staff at Alabama earlier this week, and they've already zeroed in on their new leader.

Reports tonight share that offensive coordinator Major Applewhite will be the new head coach of the Jaguars.

Applewhite has spent the past three seasons with the program.

This past season, the Jags offense ranked among the top five in the Sun Belt in scoring offense, total offense, rushing and passing.

He is the former head coach at Houston, where he went 15-10 over the course of two seasons.

Before taking over at Houston, Applewhite was the offensive coordinator for the Cougars and co-offensive coordinator at Texas before that. He also spent two seasons as an analyst for Nick Saban in Tuscaloosa before landing at USA.

Once official, the hire will fill one of three open remaining head coaching jobs at the FBS level, leaving San Jose State and Buffalo as the other two openings.
