Yesterday we shared that Southern Miss had made a decision on the future of Will Hall, noting that he will back for a fourth season.
Today, multiple reports share that changes are coming to the defensive staff in an effort to change the trajectory of the program after a 3-9 season.
Defensive coordinator Dan O'Brien and defensive line coach Brandon Lacy have both been dismissed, according to reports this morning.
O'Brien joined the staff prior to the 2021 season coaching the safeties and was elevated to defensive coordinator heading into this past fall.
He previously spent two years at Georgia in a defensive quality control role and prior to that worked with the secondary at Navy.
Lacy had been part of the staff since 2021 as well, joining Hall's staff after successfully mentoring the defensive line at Richmond (FCS) where they led the league in several key defensive categories. He also spent a decade as part of the staff at Southeastern Louisiana (FCS).
In addition to those changes, FootballScoop can confirm that tight ends coach Cayden Cochran has also been let go. Brandon Marcello was among those reporting the move.
Cochran was in his third season on staff after previously serving as offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Emporia State (D-II - KS).
