Steve Wilks will not return as the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, the club announced Wednesday.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday he expected his coaching staff to return in 2024.
“I haven’t talked to anybody yet, so, yeah, I expect all our coaches to be back,” Shanahan said when asked specifically about Wilks’ return, via 49erswebzone.
However, Shanahan said at the time he hadn't even watched film of the Super Bowl yet.
"That's stuff that we'll talk about a ton as this week goes, we'll talk about a ton in the offseason," Shanahan said. "I mean, where we want our team to be, our defense, our offense, special teams. And that's a lot of conversations, a lot of film, a lot of personnel and salary cap things we've got to discuss, drafts.
Wilks was in his first, and now only, season running San Francisco's defense. He spent 2022 as the secondary coach and interim head coach in Carolina.
