Villanova: Phil Matusz has been hired as strength and conditioning coach. Matusz takes over for Justus Galac who took an assistant strength and conditioning role with the New York Jets.
UAB: STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING INTERNSHIP. 3 POSITIONS AVAILABLE. DURATION: May 1, 2012 through July 31, 2012 COMPENSATION: Volunteer. RESPONSIBILITIES: Under administrative direction of the Assistant Athletic Director for Strength and Conditioning intern will assist strength & conditioning staff in the implementation of all strength & conditioning programs at the collegiate level.Full exposure and experience in the day-to-day operation of Division I S&C program. Expected to perform a wide variety of tasks that include: Various and assorted administrative duties, Data management, Weight room and equipment up-keep and maintenance, Workout implementation and supervision, Exercise Demonstration & Teaching Technique, Pre-workout preparation, Post-workout analysis, Assistance with warm-ups, cool-downs, performance testing and tracking, Supplement provision, Research & Projects, adhere to the rules and regulations of the NCAA, C-USA, and the policies and procedures of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. QUALIFICATIONS: Must be completing or have completed a degree in Exercise Science or related field. Ideally will have or be pursuing a certification, Experience as a collegiate athlete is also preferred but not required. This is a full-time internship intended to develop serious strength and conditioning coaches for their future. Those not willing to be available a minimum of 40 hours per week need not apply. Promotion to UAB Graduate Assistantships are possible. Akron: Brian Johnson has been hired as the head football strength and conditioning coach. Johnson previously served as an assistant strength coach at Florida State.
Georgia: Former Penn State strength coach John Thomas has been hired as a strength coach at Georgia. Thomas previously spent 20 years at Penn State. Also, Georgia has hired Sherman Armstrong to serve as speed coach. Armstrong previously trained athletes of all levels in the Tampa Bay area.
Villanova: John Shackleton has been named Head Coach for Olympic Sports at Villanova. Shackleton spent last season as a strength coach at Princeton and has also spent time on strength staffs at Pittsburgh and George Washington.
