The QB G Lead: CMU’s Answer to Odd Quarters Structure - It was back in the 2023 season when the offensive staff at Eastern Washington had a problem. They were preparing for an upstart Idaho program that, at 3-1, was shocking much of the FCS level. Offensive coordinator Jim Chapin and offensive line coach Hayden Mace were hell-bent on building in the G-lead play to take advantage of a Vandals front that was so good at spilling runs to the perimeter. The problem: they didn’t use a fullback, which was a necessity to run the G-lead. So, the solution became the QB G lead, which fit perfectly into EWU’s 11 personnel offensive system and showcased the talents of their running QB. It turned into EWU’s best QB run. It was so effective that Chapin and Mace brought it to Central Michigan this year and helped propel QB Angel Flores to over 64 yards a game before getting hurt during the second half of the season.
