South Dakota Completely Transformed Its Run Game and Its Program’s History with This Tweak to Wide Zone: For years, the University of South Dakota relied on gap schemes like A-gap power to dent defenses in the ground game. But last season new hires Josh Davis and offensive line coach Jeff Nady completely transformed their unit into a wide zone operation, completely selling out to these wide zone box inserts from 12-personnel that X&O Labs reported on earlier this month. In fact, 51% of the Coyote run game was built off outside zone compared to only 14% a year ago. It was the third most in the country according to PFF. In doing so, South Dakota finished with an 11-win season (the first in school history) and an appearance in the FCS final four. X&O Labs goes deep inside the retooling of the Coyotes' run game and how they used this concept to generate over six yards per carry, among the highest per play in the country. Watch the video here.
