Duo with a Puller? Harvard’s Explosive Concoction of Duo & Power That Solved Quick Trigger Backers: For Harvard offensive line coach Jim Jackson, the Duo gravy train started to lose its steam once second level backers started triggering too quickly downhill, prying off double teams at the line of scrimmage. Since traditional Duo is built off the read of the minus one (or backside LB), the back would get plugged up inside with no space to run. And since Harvard wasn’t an RPO operation, they were limited with options. So, the staff built in an automatic answer to handle the minus one backer. If he worked outside the box, it was a kick play. If he stayed inside the box, it was power. It was an immediate answer against second level defenders who were at three-and-a-half yards sprinting downhill. Now, they were able to use their leverage against them by trapping them with angles kicking out the edge man. And despite having a puller in the concept, Harvard finished second at the FCS level this season in tackles for loss allowed. Continue Reading.
