Texas Tech had a great plan to spice up winter workouts (Texas High School Football Recruiting)

In a competitive business, coaches are always looking for a way to inject competition into every nook and cranny they can. Texas Tech's Joey McGuire found a brilliant way to do that.

The former head coach at Cedar Hill High School, south of Dallas, turned the Red Raiders' Friday morning workout into a celebration of Texas high school football.

Everyone -- from player to coach to trainer -- repped their high school. The staff then divided the team into regions, and had each region compete against each other.

The idea works on a number of levels:

1) As stated above, it adds a competitive element to what would otherwise be a normal Friday morning workout, which likely comes at a welcome time just before spring practice opens.

2) By splitting the team by regions of the state, McGuire and company are forcing interactions amongst their players that likely don't happen often. A freshman defensive lineman and senior wide receiver likely don't cross paths often, but this forces them to work together.

3) It's great marketing for a staff that emphasizes its connection to the state's high school football. Of the 45 high school recruits McGuire and staff have signed since his November 2021 hiring (per 247Sports), 37 hailed from Texas.

Find me a group of people more excited to be up and straining before 6 a.m. on a Friday. You can't do it.
