Texas to hire Big 12 coordinator as linebackers coach (johnny nansen)

Texas is set to hire Arizona defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen as its co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, according to multiple reports on Saturday.

Nansen replaces Jeff Choate, who took the head coaching job at Nevada last month.

Nansen worked alongside Steve Sarkisian in both his previous head coaching jobs. He coached the defensive line and special teams for Sark at Washington from 2009-11, then moved to running backs from 2012-13.

Nasen came along when Sark landed the head coaching job at USC in 2014, again serving as running backs coach, special teams coordinator, and assistant head coach.

Nansen remained on staff following Sark's mid-season firing in 2015. He moved to linebackers coach in 2016, and remained through 2019. He spent 2020-21 as the defensive line coach at UCLA, then joined Jedd Fisch's staff as defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach in 2023.

Arizona allowed 31.1 points per game in the year prior to Nansen's arrival; the Wildcats surrendered 21.1 points per game this season.

In addition to coaching the same position, Nansen figures to recruit the same areas as Choate. Texas has pursued a national recruiting strategy under Sarkisian, securing players from Washington state, Utah, Hawai'i, Arizona and California.
