Keep track of how the new hires from around college football are filling their coaching staffs. Starting with The Scoop’s FBS Staff Tracker – 2019-20.
Boston College: Boston College plans to hire Ohio State assistant Jeff Hafley as their new head coach per Yahoo. Earlier today Ken Niumatalolo and another candidate both removed themselves from the process.
Big Ten: Coordinator of football officials Bill Carollo has signed a 5-year extension to remain in a job he has held since 2009. Carollo also oversees officiating in the MAC and Missouri Valley.
Memphis: Memphis has formally announced the hiring of Ryan Silverfield.
Charlie Strong: South Florida will reportedly pay Charlie Strong $3 million as part of his termination.
Missouri: DJ Smith has joined the staff as a defensive assistant. He coached outside linebackers with Drink at App State for the past two years. His positional assignment will be revealed at a later date.
Virginia Tech: Justin Fuente has added Tracy Claeys as linebackers coach and Darryl Tapp as a defensive assistant to the full time staff. For Claeys, this is a reunion with long-time boss Jerry Kill who is serves as special assistant to Fuente on the staff. Claeys most recently served as defensive coordinator for Mike Leach at Washington State. Following a lengthy NFL career, Tapp has served as a quality control at both Vanderbilt (this past season) and Central Michigan (2018).
New Mexico: Here’s an update on the New Mexico search, where two familiar names are strong candidates.
Mike Norvell: The new Florida State head coach is using that viral photo of him in cornrows as a lesson for players on dangers of social media.
UTSA: Defensive line coach Rod Wright has been retained but the rest of Frank Wilson’s staff has been let go, sources tell FootballScoop.
Ave Maria (NAIA – FL): Ave Maria University has an opening for defensive coordinator. Ave Maria is a Catholic University in southwest Florida. Interested applicants should apply via this link by January 1, 2020.
Fort Scott CC (JC- KS): Fort Scott CC is looking to hire a “full-time” Defensive Coordinator. Responsibilities will include coaching a position group, practice field organization, practice and opponent film breakdown, weekly game plans, academic advisor for position group, experience with (Hudl), recruiting area, assisting the Head strength coach, and all duties assigned by the head coach. This position will receive full benefits, health and dental insurance, and $37,500 salary. Georgia: New offensive line coach / associate head coach Matt Luke will make $900k annually, per tweet from Marc Weiszer.
Appalachian State: The Mountaineers have announced that offensive line coach Shawn Clark has been promoted to head coach. His contract is a 5-year deal. More details to come…
Boston College: Sources tell FootballScoop multiple FBS head coaches are being considered for the head coaching position at Boston College and a hire is on track. You want to see this.
Murray State (FCS – KY): On Tuesday we reported that Dean Hood would be the new head coach at Murray (per sources). Today, that became official.
Lake Erie (D-II – OH): Lake Erie College is seeking a graduate assistant to start in January. The position pays a small stipend and comes with a full tuition waiver. Employment is contingent on the ability of being accepted into the MBA program at Lake Erie College. Please send all hiring materials to [email protected].
Ohio Dominican (D-II): The Ohio Dominican University football team is seeking 5-6 candidates to fulfill football intern duties for the 2020 Winter and spring semesters. This position provides experience working for and to be affiliated with NCAA Division II certified football coaches and staff members. This offers the opportunity to assist in off-season tasks such as recruiting, video, camp organization, and overall team and player development. There is also a potential to become a Graduate Assistant. It is a great way to gain experience in this field, network, and get a letter of recommendation at the end of the season. Memphis: Ryan Silverfield will be the new head coach at Memphis.
Arkansas: Sources tell FootballScoop former Missouri head coach Barry Odom plans to join Sam Pittman’s staff at Arkansas as defensive coordinator. Odom served as defensive coordinator at Memphis 2012-14 and at Missouri 2015 before becoming head coach. Update> Pittman just confirmed our Scoop on the Finebaum show.
American International College (D-II – MA): Associate head coach / co-defensive coordinator / safeties coach Kris Kulzer has been named the interim head coach for the 2020 season. He takes over for Art Wilkins who announced his resignation earlier this week.
San Jose State: Head coach Brent Brennan has agreed to a contract extension, according to the Mercury News. Brennan led the program to a 5-7 mark this year, including a signature wins over Arkansas and rival Fresno State. Brennan had two years remaining on his original five-year deal.
Hiram (D-III – OH): Salve Regina (D-III – RI) defensive coordinator Jack Mrozinksi has been named the new head coach of the Terriers program.
Florida State: Ron Dugans is being retained and will continue to coach the wide receivers. This past season was Dugan’s first season with the Seminoles after three seasons coaching the wide receivers at Miami (FL).
Arizona State: Multiple reports out of Arizona say Arizona State is hiring Boise State offensive coordinator Zak Hill as their next offensive coordinator. Last week FootballScoop first mentioned ASU’s interest in Hill. Update> Adam Rittenberg shares that Hill is in it; but no deal has been reached at this time.

Missouri: UAB tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator Casey Woods will join the Mizzou staff as tight ends coach, source told FootballScoop last night. Mitchell Forde of Power Mizzou first reported the news. Woods and Eli Drinkwitz worked together previously at Auburn and Arkansas State.
Colorado State: Sources told FootballScoop last night that Steve Addazio is expected to bring Bowling Green tight ends coach and former Ohio State graduate assistant Louie Addazio (Steve’s son) and Ohio State senior quality control analyst Corey Dennis (the son-in-law of Urban Meyer) to the staff. We understand Louie will likely coach the offensive line, and Dennis will likely coach the quarterbacks.
