Pepper Rodgers, who led programs at Kansas, UCLA and Georgia Tech, has passed away at age 88. Rodgers also served as an assistant coach at Air Force, Florida, UCLA and went 9-2 as the head coach at Kansas in 1968, leading the Jayhawks to a Big Eight title. In 13 seasons as a head coach, Rogers won coach of the year six times and also served as the VP of football operations for the Redskins in the early 2000s.
Northern Colorado (FCS): Awful news today as safeties coach Zach Hoffpauir has died at just 26 years old.
NFL: NFL owners are reportedly set to hear a proposal that would offer draft picks in exchange for hiring minority head coaches or GMs. Details here.
UCLA: UNLV athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois has withdrawn her name from the running for the Bruins athletic director job, Mark Anderson tweets. Pete Thamel tweets that Boston College AD Martin Jarmond is UCLA’s top target and they have held discussions; but no deal is currently in place.
Madonna (NAIA – MI): Former Colorado State defensive graduate assistant Ahmed Saleh has been hired to coach the secondary, source tells FootballScoop.
TCU: Gary Patterson and Frogs assistants Sonny Cumbie, Chad Glasgow, Jarrett Anderson, and Dan Sharp have been among a group accepting a voluntary pay cut, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Patterson made around $4.9 million last year, and earlier this year donated $50,000 to the school’s coronavirus relief fund.
Cleveland Browns: Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, the director of football research and development with the 49ers, is joining the Browns organization as VP of football operations according to multiple reports.
Georgia State: Dan Elliington, who served as the team’s starting quarterback the last two seasons, is joining the staff as an assistant coach. Head coach Shawn Elliott shares that Ellington will work with several positions, primarily with the running backs, and will also spend time with the quarterbacks and receivers as well.
MAC: The Mid-American Conference plan to shrink travel rosters and no longer stay in hotels before home games, Nick Blade shares.
Oklahoma: On the same day SEC presidents scheduled a vote to bring players back to campus as soon as June 1, Lincoln Riley called the concept “one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard.” He may have an unlikely ally here.
