Thursday morning: Coaches Quick Hits
Alabama: About Nick Saban's new contract...there is a clause that calls for both sides to meet in February 2015 to "determine marketplace trends," and make sure Saban remains one of the three highest-paid coaches in the country. If that wasn't important, why have it written in? The most interesting part of the new deal is the $5 million retention bonus. Rather than pay a lump sum at the end of the contract, Alabama is going to pay Saban an additional $1.6 million if he's still the head coach in 2012; another $1.7 million if he remains until 2015, and another $1.7 million if he should still be eating Little Debbies while pacing the hallways of the Mal Moore Athletic Complex in 2018.
