The Scoop

Friday November 13, 2009

Western Kentucky: We are hearing that Wood Selig did contact former WKU head coach Jack Harbaugh to gauge his interest in returning to WKU. We do not believe Harbaugh is a legitimate candidate, but our source (close to Harbaugh) did mention to us that contact has been made. The other name we are now hearing from more than one source is Elon University head coach Pete Lembo. Lembo is the former Lehigh head coach that has built the Elon progam into a Southern Conference leader.

Memphis: The Memphis Commericial-Appeal writes this morning, "Five names -- Larry Porter, Rick Stockstill, Terry Bowden, Gunter Brewer and Bud Foster -- have emerged as leading candidates to become the next University of Memphis football coach, according to sources close to the process." None of the candidates have interviewed.

FootballScoop is hearing that FedEx CEO Fred Smith is very excited about two candidates in particular -- Gunter Brewer and Larry Porter. Our source tells us that Memphis athletic director RC Johnson has leaned on Lou Holtz for advice during the search process.

An interesting side note -- sources tell FootballScoop that Tommy West actually offered Gunter Brewer the offensive cooridnator job when West initially took over as head football coach at Memphis over 9 years ago.
