Wednesday: Coaches Quick Hits

Minnesota Gophers: "He's our football coach, and I expect him to be our football coach," athletic director Paul Maturi said. "There's always issues there. You know me -- I don't like to be dishonest. And I don't want to be [Alabama coach] Nick Saban and say 'yes,' and then two weeks later say 'no.' But I expect [Brewster] to be our football coach.

"I think you've got two more games to decide that. I'm excited about the passion and the energy that he's brought to this program. I think we have better football players overall than we've had in the past.

Murray State: We are hearing that Will Hall (West Alabama - OC), Denver Johnson (Colorado - OL), and Hugh Freeze (Lambuth - HC) are all interested in the Murray State head coaching job.

Navy: Head coach Ken Niumatolo stated today that he not interested in leaving the Naval Academy for another job. Coach Niumatolo stated, "The Naval Academy has made a significant commitment to me and my family, for whcih we are eternally grateful. We love this great institution, we love Annapolis and we love the young men that we have been entrusted to lead. The Naval Academy is a special place and I have no desire to coach anywhere else in the country. This mutual commitment is a clear sign of the future direction of this storied program."

Indiana State: From what we hear, offensive line coach David Poinsett has left the staff.

Dixie State College (UT): We just heard that Ryan Haun is stepping down as head coach. Dixie State is D2. Our source tells us OC Scott Brumfield will serve as the interim head coach.

Buffalo Bills: It appears the Bills have already contacted Mike Shanahan. Jim Haslett and Kevin Gilbride could also get in the mix according to an ESPN report.

Western Kentucky: We are hearing that Western Kentucky is going to take a long and hard look at Buffalo head coach Turner Gill.

Florida State: Ann Bowden says, "His quarterback's going to be a senior next year, and (Bowden) wants to be there for his senior year. That's only right. And all those young kids are going to be a year older. ... He's planning on another year."

She then went on the attack and added that if FSU doens't renew his one-year deal, "we don't need the university as much as they need us - as much as they need him and his connections and reputation and
everything. If they want to pull that trick, we'll just shake the dirt off our feet and go to Europe or go on a long cruise or something. They'll have to fire him for him not to go another year ... If they've got guts enough to do it, let them do it."

MTSU: Rick Stockstill stated today that he is no longer a candidate at Memphis.

UNLV: Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson says, "I love the location," Wilson said. "I love the conference and the opportunity to build a program Las Vegas and Southern Nevada would be proud of. That's what excites coaches and excites me."

Interesting note on UNLV assistants: AD Jerry Koloskie says the contracts of the assistants state they must be paid for an extra 60 days, a total outpay between $300,000 - $400,000.

Les Miles (on conversations with Larry Porter about the Memphis job): "I have not had conversations of length with Larry Porter about any other job. We're really focused on this season and what we're doing here. I'm fortunate to have quality assistants, and yes, I would support my assistants for head coaching jobs if they're so inclined."

Cornell College (IA): We are hearing early this morning that Matt Dillon has resigned as head coach.

UTEP: AD Bob Stull stated last night that head coach Mike Price will return next year as head coach, no matter what happens in the Miners last 2 ball games.

Stull commented, "We have Trevor coming back and Buckram ... Those people, their senior year, to be fair to them and also to give them a chance to maximize their senior year and give Mike the full five years of his recruiting class, I think that would be fair. And I feel good about that."

San Jose State: Our sources tell us that Oregon State defensive coordinator Mark Banker will be involved in the search process. We also hear several NFL assistants are interested in the San Jose State job.

Pace University (NY): We have just received information that the head coach at Pace University will not return.

Alcorn State & Mississippi Valley State: Mississippi Govenor Haley Barbour is proposing to merge Mississippi Valley State University and Alcorn State University into the larger Jackson State University. The proposal is to help with the state's budget. This makes us wonder about the future of Alcorn State and MVSU football.

2010 & 2011 Open Dates: The database will be updated this afternoon. Send us your emails if you have changes.
