Bud Foster on Pressuring the Modern Quarterback: There's a reason why Bud Foster's defenses at Virginia Tech still rank 1st in sacks (894), 1st in sack yards (-6,110), and 1st in third-down defensive percentage (31.6%) despite having not coached in two seasons. But, make no mistake, the FBS "G.O.A.T." is not done with football. He's been quietly assisting defensive coaches around the country in developing new innovations to combat the advancements of today’s offenses. First on his priority? Design pressures to manipulate the modern quarterback. He learned the hard way that 3-Deep, 3-Under pressure patterns like good ole Whip and Cane Dog are now easily detected and exploited. Today’s QBs are too schooled in identifying rotations and taking advantage of negated space and personnel mismatches. It's why later in his career, he created what he called "switch" coverage to protect a lesser talented boundary corner against a dominant X while overloading coverages to the field to protect against seam routes—where QBs were previously afraid to throw against pressure. In an exclusive study with X&O Labs’ Mike Kuchar, Bud Foster presents his entire pressure catalog which includes illustrations, narrated video, and game film. This presentation is available right now: Go here to start reading (watch video).
