ACC coaches lobby to move signing day to December: In the current recruiting culture, coaches believe they have to aggressively monitor and baby-sit even the prospects they feel surest to sign. Players routinely make non-binding verbal commitments long before the February national letter signing date. An estimate by the coaches association puts the number of such prospects at about 1,000 to 1,500 each year. But as much as coaches work to get early pledges, they can be a liability as much as an asset. Rival schools often gang up on the apparent recruit winner by using negative campaigning tactics intended to dislodge the vow and reopen the prospect's interest in other programs. Link...
