Tuberville watches Mississippi State practice: "They coach on the run, coach 'em hard and the players respond," Tuberville said. "That's what you look for in practice. It's going to take them a while to get everything in place," Tuberville said, "but I like the scheme. It's a great scheme."

Interesting thoughts from San Diego State offensive coordinator Al Borges: "I'm not a spread coach; you have to find someone else," he says. "It's a good offense. I know this: they're all good - if you have the kids." Borges has no plans to make chicken salad from the stuff found on the coop's floor. Long ran the spread offense. It won't happen under Borges. Long basically gave up on the run. Borges will insist on it or get fired trying. "It all starts with balance," says Borges, whose new charges yesterday participated in the first practice of fall drills. "I beat that term up, but if you can't strike two different ways, the defense is going to hone in on what you do best. You must be able to run and pass with efficiency. There must be a threat of both to the defense. With one, you can do a helluva lot of damage, but you can't win consistently. "You can get away with it once in a while, but then they're going to overplay you, make you figuratively left-handed. Forget the X's and O's. From a philosophical standpoint, you must be balanced to have staying power. It helps everywhere, even in recruiting. I love the passing game. Love it. But you have to be able to do something else. I've done this seven times - this is my eighth coordinator job - so I think I have an idea." Link...

FSU defensive GA Terrell Buckley coaching them up: "He's always coaching technique, technique. Because when you get tired that is the only thing that is going to help you," Allen said. "That's the biggest thing. And he's helping us with the true meaning of watching film - showing you where your help is, things like that." Link...

Oregon's intern program grooms future coaches: Oregon's intern program for grooming future coaches bore results this fall when Alex Miller was elevated from intern to graduate assistant for the start of training camp. Interns, who receive a small stipend, are barred from doing on-field coaching. But they chart plays and hold play cards during practice, and also assist the full-time staff in the weight room, with recruiting and in monitoring academics. Link...
