2010 Coaches Quick Hits

Wednesday September 16, 2009

Quoting Gene Chizik: "Here's how I feel about our fans here at Auburn: Number one, we've got the greatest fans in the world, and they do their job as good as it gets. And I want them to be excited about the future. It's going to be very bright. As I said earlier in the week, we're not ready to buy stock in Auburn football yet. It's just not where we're at. We're just so far from that, but I do want our fans to be excited. As a matter of fact, one of the things that really excites our football players is our fans. And our fans need to know that our football team gets so much energy from them. And just like we're trying to up our game this week, we've got to take it to a new level, we want our fans to be the absolute loudest stadium in the country. And we're going to challenge them because they are phenomenal. I've been to the best places--stadiums, other than the SEC, in the country. I‘ve been to the Ohio State's, the USC's and the Texas'--this (Auburn) is second to none."

Quoting Dan Hawkins: "I'm always secure," he said. "Whether you approve of me or disapprove of me really doesn't affect my self-esteem. It really doesn't. I know this. My boss is sitting over here and we're doing things right by the kids. We're doing things right by the school, and we're doing things right football-wise. We're doing things the way you're supposed to do them. I know that." He referred to past CU teams who started seasons with losses and went on to bowl games as evidence that the season can be salvaged. He pointed to the 2007 New York Giants, who started the year 0-2 with heavy pressure on coach Tom Coughlin. The Giants won the Super Bowl. "There are a ton of those stories out there, but nobody likes those stories," he said. "Nobody recounts those stories. Nobody publishes those stories because nobody likes those stories. That doesn`t create conflama. That doesn`t get the juices flowing. Those stories are out there, but everyone wants to live in the world of drama and hype and all that."

Quoting Dabo Swinney: Seems like the team is in a positive mood after loss, what does that come from? "We have a great coaching staff and leadership on this team. You don't fool football players. These are smart guys, they watch the film and know where issues are. They know what you have done well and not done well. They understand things they can control and the things we can't control. Every one of them wholeheartedly believes that we are a better football team now than we were at this point last week. It is one thing to think you are doing the right things, but it is another to know you are. If you want to know what "all in" is then you watch that ball game. You see a group of kids that believe and are committed to a standard of excellence. That doesn't mean that we are going to be perfect, but if we can maintain that type of commitment and effort then you have a chance to be a pretty good football team. What you saw the other night was our effort and will to win that is uncommon. They are a close football team."

On not using the "underdog role" as motivation going into Saturday: "I don't believe in the underdog role for motivation. If you're not motivated for this game, something's wrong with you. It's Tennessee versus Florida. Regardless of what the spread is or who's the favorite or who's the underdog, it's a big-time matchup. It's one that a lot of these kids have been watching for years and years growing up. I would be shocked if either side needs to motivate players. I look at their 11 starters on defense and I think you have 11 NFL players,'' Kiffin said Tuesday. "I would think they're the most talented defense ever to play. And probably the best quarterback to ever play college football. So we're going to have our hands full.''
