2010 Coaches Quick Hits

Wednesday April 21, 2010

Quoting Steve Spurrier: "Every coach, if he's done it a long time - if it starts going bad - then he needs to step aside. One of my goals as a coach - and I will reach that goal, I'm pretty sure - is to never get fired.

"Maybe two percent are able to say they never got fired. It cost me a lot of (money) to leave the Redskins without saying, 'Fire me.' Cost me a lot of dough, but that's all right."

Quoting Tyrone Nix: "Right now, I'd take six of our front seven over anybody else's in the league. But when you lose Emmanuel Stephens, Greg Hardy and Marcus Tillman -- all in one year at defensive end -- that puts you in a little bit of a bind at that spot."

"We're going to be stout inside. The unknown is that other end spot."

"Our job is to get the ball back to the offense and get it back as quickly as possible. We want to be the aggressor. We want to play with outstanding effort. We want to make a lot of plays in the backfield. That's going to remain the same regardless of what's happening on the other side of the ball."

"We have some guys on defense who've been through the battles. We'll see how much they improve and how some of the guys behind them develop."

Quoting Monte Kiffin: "We played the run good but there were too many explosion plays. The good news is No. 7 (Barkley) is on our team."

Quoting Ron Zook: "This is the way we want it. This is you way you'll do it. If you're not going to do it, we'll put somebody else in there. That's the biggest change. It's been a breath of fresh air to me. You don't have to say the same things over and over again.

"The coaches are not only demanding, but they've taught. Coaching is teaching. Your best coaches are your best teachers.''

Quoting Steve Sarkisian: "I want to make sure that our guys understand that we don't just come out here and run plays, that we are not just calling three-deep zone or four verts or outside zone on offense, it's them understanding why we are calling the things we are calling and really understanding conceptually what we are trying to get accomplished. The installation is way down now. Now it's understanding what and why we are calling it in the situations we are getting.''

"I don't know if we've been as physical as I want, that's why we came out with a point of emphasis, I wanted a physical practice today. We need to be more physical up front on both sides of the ball, to be honest with you."

Dooley says Fulmer is supportive: "I called him on the phone right when I took the job and told him how much respect I had for him and what he'd done here and was humbled to have the job that he had. I told him that I hoped, in time, that he would be supportive, and he has been."

"We had a nice dinner, and it was just the two of us, no wives. It was two coaches talking, and I did more listening. He was a great resource for me to get started."

(On Lane Kiffin) "I don't know Lane, and it's not because of anything. I just don't know him. You know, I really have no real reason to talk with him."
