2010 Coaches Quick Hits

Wednesday May 19, 2010

Quoting Nick Saban: "I personally think Julio Jones has done a lot to change the culture of what a wide receiver is at Alabama in terms of toughness. A lot of people equate a good year to the number of catches you make, but if you look at the whole picture, I think he had a great year and maybe next year we can do a better job of getting the ball to him."

"I don't know if it's a matter of not having necessarily one or two elite players as much as it is to get a football team to believe," said Kelly, the nation's sixth-winningest active coach at .747. "That's the dynamic I've spent most of my time working on."

Quoting UVA head coach Mike London: "I knew we had to change what people thought about the program. We had to reinvest, re-energize and reinvigorate the fan base by reaching out to them and letting them know that things are going to be different."

Quoting Purdue head coach Danny Hope: "This summer is critical for us. We have to get in great shape."

"We created some great depth. A lot more guys are in position to compete to play. There should be a lot of guys hungry to work this summer."

"We have to have a great commitment to the weight room and the off-season conditioning phase. The more committed we are, the more confidence we'll have coming out of the summer. Confidence is a huge factor on any team. If we pay a hell of a price this summer, we'll have some confidence."

"We're trying to get guys to graduate in December to avoid academic attrition. We didn't have many guys drafted, but we had a bunch of guys who have NFL opportunities. If they graduate early, they can focus on their NFL efforts and not have to forfeit their graduation."

Quoting Illinois DC Vic Koenning: "I truly believe we can be one of the most feared defenses, not just in the conference but the country. But it doesn't matter what I believe, it's what they do and believe. I have a sense that there's a belief in them, and that I'm trying to get them where they want to go and where we want to go. So we're all in this thing together."

"I think what will determine how good we are early in the season this next year is how the guys work together. Do they continue to progress and polish and create the habits we tried to get going here in the spring?"
