2010 Coaches Quick Hits

Wednesday July 7, 2010

Quoting Dan Mullen: "I think the most important one is 'you be you. You have to be yourself and coach to your personality. I am a very hands-on person. I like to be involved in a lot of aspects of things, so I need to do it that way. You don't try to be something you're not or try to imitate another coach. You just try to be yourself and play to your strengths."

"I think it's trickier to get your hands on everything. You become a little bit more jack-of-all-trades and master of none. You want your coaches to be the masters of their trade. You want your receivers coach to be the absolute best receivers coach and the coordinator to put the game plan together."

"When you look at the overall aspects of things, it's my job to make sure they are the best at what they do."

Quoting Mike Stoops: "As always, we want to compete for a championship. We've been on the threshold the last couple years. I think we've had some successful seasons, but we want to have a significant season. That will be to win a championship."

"It gives us a lot more confidence heading into the season offensively to have two quarterbacks that have started. I think you will see two much more mature players on the field."

"Defensively we're just going to have to mature. We have some young guys that will have to mature quickly."

Quoting Kansas offensive line coach JB Grimes: "There is no substitute for experience. You can't do without it, and there's only one way to get it. And we've got some guys who have played the game quite a bit at the University of Kansas. To have those guys and to know that when they first run out onto that field they're not going to have a wide-eyed look and they'll be looking around and knowing what they're doing, that's really a comforting feeling."

"I think this group is probably a little bit ahead of schedule from a pass-blocking standpoint. Obviously, that kind of makes sense when you look at how they threw the ball as many times as they did a year ago. Some of that has to do with the physicality. You always have to throw the football, we all know that. What we've also got to do is be able to run the football. We can't just throw young quarterbacks on the field and throw it every down. So we've got to develop that mentality to be able to run the ball, and I think we will because they're smart, and they're tough guys."

Quoting Georgia Southern OC Brent Davis: "Getting into the playoffs would be a great goal for us."

"If you want to major in the triple-option, you need the right guy at quarterback. Athletically, we have two or three guys who can (run the option). They just don't have the experience. Jaybo has experience and that's going to help him."

"I don't want to put any pressure on the freshmen, but I think there will be some guys who will make an impact. That will be obvious in the first game (against Savannah State, Sept. 4)."
