2010 Coaches Quick Hits

Thursday July 29, 2010

Quoting Mack Brown: "The agreement we had is I would stay as long as I wanted to. I would be in total control while I stayed. [Muschamp] would be the defensive coordinator, Greg [Davis] would be the offensive coordinator and we would keep this rolling."

"I've told the staff that if any of you talk about the future, if any of you start discussing the next step, I'm going to fire you. It's not fair to me, it's not fair to the kids and it's not fair to the other coaches on the staff."

"People don't believe this, but I haven't set a timetable. And Will understands that. Will says, 'You've earned the right to coach as long as you want and I'm in good shape and I love what I'm doing. You coach as long as you want to.' "

Quoting Bob Stoops: "Our goal isn't to just beat Texas," Stoops said when asked if that was a yes or a no."

"Our goal is to win the Big 12 championship and win the national championship, right? And three of the last four years, that's what we've done in the time period you're talking about."

"In the end, we've been in four national championship games in 10 years, and so what we're doing, I don't know if it is a problem or not. But it's a pretty good one if it is."

Quoting Dan Hawkins: "It`s all about the challenge. I love being with these guys. I love being with the players, love being with the coaches, love the competition, love the strategy, love all that."

Quoting Turner Gill: I focus on the things that I can control. I'm passionate about trying to develop young men. That's what my purpose here on earth ... is. That's what I love to do. I knew things were going to fall into place - didn't necessarily know when - but as long as I was going to be able to be coaching and teaching young men, that's all that mattered to me.

I'm a firm believer ... in building relationships. So, we put out a little bit of a survey deal that I gave to every single player, every single coach. It had about eight to 10 questions that were really detailed about who they are, where they came from and how they came to where they are today. For example, one question I had everybody answer was, "Who was the most influential person in your life and why?" Had all of our players and all of our coaches stand in front of our team and talk about that. I wanted to make sure that we got a chance to know that there's a lot more in common that we have with each other than we have differences.

Quoting Bronco Mendenhall: "BYU isn't any other place. There are some conferences that, quite frankly, don't want a faith-based institution. We're very clear on who we are, what we represent and how we're going to play -- and [we] don't measure ourselves against anyone else."

Quoting UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck: "I think the first part has to be to improve on defense. We can't be ranked 110th or whatever it is on defense and expect to be a good football team."

"My biggest concern is that the schedule is so demanding, that the effort and commitment and improvement doesn't show up in the win column. That's my biggest concern, because I think we've improved in every area since Day One."
