2011 Defensive Backs Coach of the Year The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by SpeedTracs are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. Finalists were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. A panel of coaches, including previous recipients, will determine the the 2011 winner. Votes tallied on this page are considered; however our panel will make the final decision. Voting for this award ends on Thursday December 8th. Previous winners of the Defensive Backs Coach of the Year award are Tim Billings (Wake Forest, 2008), Troy Douglas and Everett Withers (North Carolina, 2009) and Clay Jennings and Chad Glasgow (TCU, 2010).
Dan Disch & Grady Brown
Bob Shoop & Wesley McGriff
Ron Cooper - Louisiana State University
You might have heard of the Honey Badger, the most explosive, game changing defensive player in college football...but he might not even be the best DB on Ron Cooper's squad. The way Coach Cooper recruits and prepares his players is top notch...and then they execute better than most, if not every other squad out there.
6th in Pass Defense (162 YPG)
1st in Passing TDs Allowed (6)
10th in Interceptions (16)
DBs have scored 6 TDs
9th in Opponent Completion % (52%)
They have a guy named Honey Badger
Dan Disch & Grady Brown - Southern Miss
Pretty impressive when 4 of your opponents nominate you for an award. That's the case here for Coaches Disch and Brown who oversee and unit that has literally won games for their team. Southern Miss has returned 7 interceptions to the house. Read that again.
1 in Ints. Returned for TD (7)
10th in Interceptions (16)
12th in Pass Efficiency Def. (110)
10th in Yards Allowed per Att. (6)
Mike Reed - North Carolina State
Mike Reed's squad is averaging over 2 picks per game. Think about that. Sophomore CB David Amerson has 11 picks himself (ties an ACC single season record). And it's not just Amerson, Brandon Bishop, a safety, is 9th in the country with 5 picks.
1st in Interceptions (24)
Amerson leads the nation with 11 Ints.
2 of the 4 leading tacklers on team are DBs
Bob Shoop and Crime Dog - Vanderbilt University
In nominating Coach Shoop and Coach McGriff, a wide receivers coach within the SEC said, "Vanderbilt's DBs are scrappy. They are always in position and they fight relentlessly for the ball."
6th in Interceptions (17)
Casey Hayward recorded 5 Ints. 1 for a TD
32nd in Yards Per Attempt (7)
4 Ints. Returned for TDs
