FootballScoop is proud to announce that Bob Gregory (Boise State) is the 2012 FootballScoop Linebackers Coach of the Year presented by ProGrass.
Boise State once again turned in an excellent year in 2012, posting a 10-2 record and claiming a share of the Mountain West Conference championship. But after losing the likes of Kellen Moore and Doug Martin, the Broncos' defense, led by Gregory's linebackers, headed the charge to another successful season.
Gregory celebrated his silver anniversary in the coaching profession this season. After graduating from Washington State, Gregory began coaching at Washington University in St. Louis in 1987 as the defensive backs coach and became the defensive coordinator one year later. Gregory then made his return to the West Coast, serving as a graduate assistant at Oregon and the defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator at Williamette (Ore.). He returned to Eugene in 1998-00 as the defensive backs coach, made a one-year stay at Boise State and then worked as the defensive coordinator at Cal from 2002-09. In 2010, he returned to Boise State to work under his former colleague Chris Petersen, who coached wide receivers for Oregon while Gregory headed the defensive backs.
The Broncos' linebackers were led by senior J.C. Percy, who posted a team-leading 101 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one quarterback hit and one pass breakup en route to winning First Team All-MWC honors. Overall, Gregory's linebackers accounted for three of the team's top six tacklers.
Most importantly, the linebackers spearheaded a brick wall of a defense for Boise State. The Broncos ranked inside college football's top 10 in four defensive categories. Most importantly, the placed ninth in total defense (304.7 yards per game) and sixth in scoring defense (14.9 points per game). They also ranked seventh in pass efficiency defense (101.4) and tied for fourth in pass defense (163.4 yards per game).
Boise State held 11 of its 12 opponents to 21 points or less, and eight foes to 14 points or less. The Broncos' defense forced 33 turnovers, tied for the third-most in college football.
Gregory's linebackers led a unit that also ranked 10th in college football in first downs defense (17.1 per game) and seventh in red zone defense. In 29 trips (the third-fewest allowed in FBS), the Broncos surrendered just 18 touchdowns and one field goal.
Boise State was also especially tough to produce explosive plays against. The Broncos allowed only 114 plays of 10 yards or more, the third-fewest in college football. Forty-three of those plays came on the ground (No. 15 nationally) and 71 came through the air, second-least in FBS.
The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by ProGrass are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Gregory, Bob Diaco - Notre Dame, Clark Lea - Bowling Green and Kelly Poppinga & Paul Tidwell - BYU) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. The prior winners selected this year's winner.
Gregory will receive his award and be recognized at an event at the AFCA Convention in January.
Previous winners of the Linebackers Coach of the Year award are Bill McGovern (Boston College, 2008), Bob Fraser (Rutgers, 2009), Luke Fickell (Ohio State, 2010) and Dave Huxtable (Wisconsin, 2011).
