FootballScoop is proud to announce that Dave Huxtable (Wisconsin) is the 2011 FootballScoop Linebackers Coach of the Year presented by SpeedTracs.
Huxtable is in his first season with the Badgers since coming from UCF in January where he served as the defensive coordinator. In his inaugural season with the Badger’s Huxtable led the linebackers to not only an impressive season as a unit, but also a Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl berth.
The play of the linebacker unit allowed Wisconsin to dominate in many of their wins, allowing less than 300 yards of total offense in 8 of their games this year. In their second game of the season, the Badgers front seven dominated allowing only 23 yards rushing on 24 attempts to Oregon State.
Huxtable’s linebackers had little trouble tracking the ball sideline to sideline this season. The tandem of Mike Taylor (JR) and Chris Borland (SO) racked up at least 130 tackles each and rank in the top 11 tacklers in the country. As if that feat wasn’t impressive enough, Borland and Taylor also rank as the top two tacklers in the Big Ten. Taylor ranks #8 in the nation with tackles with 137, and Borland has accounted for 131 tackles, ranking #11 nationally. Both Taylor and Borland average more than 10 tackles per game.
A coach who coached with Huxtable at UCF told FootballScoop, "Dave gets his players into positions to make plays and he teaches them how to finish. He is a great teacher. His players know their assignments and are fundamentally sound; but he just has this way of teaching his players how to finish tackles and they never miss."
The Badger defense, anchored by the linebacker play of Huxtable’s unit, ranked among the top defenses units in the country in numerous categories. The Wisconsin defense ranks #6 in the country in scoring defense, allowing only 17 points per game, and 8th nationally in total defense allowing less than 300 yards per game, allowing less than 5 yards per play (#17 nationally).
The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by SpeedTracs are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Huxtable, Bill McGovern - Boston College and Sal Sunseri - Alabama) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. A panel of coaches including previous recipients determined the winner.
Previous winners of the Linebackers Coach of the Year award are Bill McGovern (Boston College, 2008), Bob Fraser (Rutgers, 2009) and Luke Fickell (Ohio State, 2010).
