Frank Wilson - 2011 Running Backs Coach of the Year

FootballScoop is proud to announce that Frank Wilson (LSU) is the 2011 FootballScoop Running Backs Coach of the Year presented by SpeedTracs.

Frank Wilson is in his second season with LSU, and is widely regarded as one of the top running back coaches and recruiters in the country. This season, Wilson's top four backs rushed for over 2,300 yards for an average of nearly 5.5 yards per carry and they scored 30 rushing touchdowns.

Wilson's high school coach and mentor is Burton Burns, Alabama's running backs coach, a former winner of this award and a finalist for this year's award. Burns told FootballScoop that he takes great pride in seeing how Frank has grown into one of the best coaches in the game, "Frank is special. He's young, but he's mature; and when he's done, people will look back and say he was one of the finest coaches and men they have ever met."

The Tigers overall running game ranks 25th nationally, rushing for nearly 5 yards a carry. Having a deep stable of running backs allowed LSU to rank amongst the top 21 teams in the country in attempts per game as well with over 43 attempts per game.

Wilson and the Tigers have taken the term “running back by committee” to new heights. Wilson has led three different sophomore running backs to a season where they've gained at least 500 yards each on the ground. Michael Ford has gained 767 yards on 123 carries, Spencer Ware has 720 yards on 174 carries and Alfred Blue has 543 yards on 78 touches. The trio of Blue, Ford, and freshman running back Kenny Hillard also rank in the top 65 in yards per carry, all averaging over 5 each time they tote the rock (Hilliard – 5.61, Ford – 6.14, Blue – 6.91).

The stable of running backs have continued their punishment of defenses as the game wears on, with 67% of their rushing yards coming in the second half or overtime. Lining up with a fullback and tailback most of the time has been LSU’s identity and have allowed them to lean on the running game rushing for 2,797 yards, ranking them #13 nationally. Wilson’s running backs have also found the end zone via the ground game an impressive 35 times (#5). The core group of Ware, Ford, Hilliard, and Blue have all reached the end zone a minimum of 7 times, with James Stampley and Terrance Magee have also chipped in a touchdown each.

One SEC defensive line coach told FootballScoop, "Coach Wilson's guys beat on you. They are strong and they don't make mistakes. They all block well and they never fumble the ball. What else could you want?"

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by SpeedTracs are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Wilson, Burton Burns - Alabama and Thomas Hammock - Wisconsin) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. A panel of coaches including previous recipients determined the winner.

Previous winners of the Running Backs Coach of the Year award are Burton Burns (Alabama, 2008), Willie Taggart (Stanford, 2009) and Jim Mastro (Nevada, 2010).
