FootballScoop is proud to announce that Jim Mastro (Nevada) is the 2010 FootballScoop Running Backs Coach of the Year presented by SpeedTracs.
Mastro directed a group of running backs the helped Nevada rush for 305 yards per game. Running back Vai Taua rushed for 127 yards per game, while averaging 5.9 yards per carry. For the third consecutive year, Taua earned First Team All-WAC honors. Mastro’s group of backs lost only 3 fumbles in 13 games.
Converting 56% of third-down opportunities helped the Wolf Pack average 535 total yards per game. Explosive runs were a big part of the Nevada offense as the rushing game produced 113 plays of 10+ yards, third most in the country. The Wolf Pack also finished with 38 runs of 20+ yards, fifth most in the country.
Head coach Chris Ault recently told FootballScoop, "Jim has been a very valuable asset to me in our Pistol offense as our running game has been one of the most prolific in the country. He is a quality coach who has the respect of his players as seen in their style of play. I can’t think of a more deserving person than Jim for this award."
Nevada has earned a trip to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco on January 9th, where the Wolf Pack will play Boston College.
The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by SpeedTracs are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Mastro, Jay Graham - South Carolina, Rob Reeves - Northern Illinois and John Settle - Wisconsin) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel.
