Scott Stoker - 2011 FCS Coordinator of the Year

FootballScoop is proud to announce that Scott Stoker (Sam Houston) is the 2011 FootballScoop FCS Coordinator of the Year presented by SpeedTracs.

Scott Stoker is in his third season directing the defense and linebackers for the Bearkats, and has literally rebuilt this defense from the ground up since his arrival. Head coach Willie Fritz told FootballScoop, "Coach Stoker's players love playing for him. He drives them hard but he cares a lot about them and they know it. On the field he's doing some cutting edge stuff and the results are clear." The Bearkats are currently 13-0 and play tomorrow night in the national semifinals against Montana.

Stoker’s unit was among the nation’s top defenses in almost every major statistical category. They ranked #1 in rush defense (67 ypg), and #2 nationally in pass efficiency defense (96.39), total defense (276 ypg), scoring defense (14 ppg), and turnover margin (2.0). The Bearkats are the top defense in the Southland Conference in each of those statistical categories.

The secondary play of the Bearkats has been led by the efforts of Daxton Swanson who ranks #3 nationally in interceptions picking off 8 passes this season. Swanson had a two game stretch against Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana where he posted back to back 2 interception games and returned those for 82 yards.

As a unit, the Bearkats have forced an impressive 37 turnovers (16 fumbles gained, 21 interceptions). In 13 games, only two opponents have been able to gain over 100 yards rushing, and only 5 teams have been able to throw for over 230 yards. Against Central Arkansas, the Bearkat defense allowed only 47 net yards on 24 carries. Their most impressive stretch defensively might have come during a three game period against UTSA, Stephen F. Austin and Nicholls State where the defense accounted for 10 interceptions in 3 games.

Coach Fritz added, "Coach Stoker brought all these kids in here three years ago. They are now juniors and he's got them playing at a high level. He deserves the credit for identifying the talent and then getting them to play together as a unit at a very high level."

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by SpeedTracs are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Stoker, Dave Cecchini of Lehigh and Brent Davis of Georgia Southern) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. A panel of coaches including previous recipients determined the winner.

Previous winners of the FCS Coordinator of the Year award are Heishma Northern (Prairie View A&M, 2008), Bob Shoop (William & Mary, 2009) and Nick Rapone (Delaware, 2010).
