Wallie Kuchinski - Division III Coordinator of the Year

FootballScoop is proud to announce that Wallie Kuchinski (St. Thomas) is the 2011 FootballScoop Division III Coordinator of the Year presented by SpeedTracs.

Wallie Kuchinski joined the Tommie football program in the spring of 2008 as the defensive coordinator and his squad has shown steady improvement each season since. Prior to St. Thomas, Kuchinski served as defensive coordinator / and recruiting coordinator at Truman State (Mo).

Head coach Glenn Caruso told FootballScoop, "Wallie has done an amazing job improving our defensive unit's output the past four seasons. This year's defensive production was stellar and a direct correlation to the work and focus of Wallie and our defensive coaching staff. Wallie's effort and commitment to UST and our young men has been absolutely phenomenal."

Kuchinski’s defense has been one of the most dominant from top to bottom in small college football. The run defense has only allowed 57 yards per game, ranking 2nd nationally, and the Tommie's also have the #21 ranked pass efficiency defense as well (96.77). The front seven rank #8 nationally in sacks (3.43 pg), and also rank #4 in total defense (217 ypg) and #3 scoring defense (10 ppg).

The Tommies have only allowed three of their fourteen opponents to gain more than 100 yards on the ground this year, and have held five teams to less than 15 yards on the ground. One of those dominant performances came against Hamline where the defense held Hamline to -1 yards rushing on 36 attempts. The defense allowed only 7 rushing touchdowns on the year.

The Tommie defense picked off 19 passes compared to only allowing 10 passing touchdowns. Kuchinski’s unit had an impressive seven game stretch where they recorded at least one interception, and they recorded at least one pick in 10 of their 14 games this season. Only two of their opponents passed for multiple touchdowns.

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by SpeedTracs are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Kuchinski, Brian Borland - Wisconsin Whitewater and Clay Richardson - Cal Lutheran) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. A panel of coaches including previous recipients determined the winner.

Previous winners of the FCS Coordinator of the Year award are Glen Fowles (Willamette, 2008), Jim Zebrowski (Wisconsin Whitewater, 2009) and Vince Kehres (Mount Union, 2010).
