UNLV, Arroyo add 2 to defensive staff including former NFL player (Clay Jennings)

Second-year UNLV coach Marcus Arroyo has added a pair of key hires – including a former San Francisco 49ers player – on the defensive side of his Runnin' Rebels staff.

Clay Jennings, formerly of North Texas, has been tabbed as UNLV's cornerbacks coach. Larry Grant, who spent six seasons in the NFL with a trio of teams, including his hometown San Francisco, has joined the staff in a defensive analyst role.

It's a pair of formidable additions for Arroyo, who in Jennings gets a coach with major college experience including time in both the Big 12 Conference and the Southeastern Conference.

“He is a veteran coach who brings to our program invaluable years of experience at both the Power 5-level and in the Mountain West Conference,” Arroyo said in UNLV's release. “Coach Jennings' skill set and tenure is perfectly matched to the task of developing and preparing our young cornerbacks room for the upcoming season.”

Jennings is a North Texas graduate.

Grant starred first in junior college at City College of San Francisco and then concluded his collegiate career at Ohio State.

After his half-dozen years of pro ball, Grant transitioned into college coaching at his junior college alma mater. Grant also has been a prep head coach.

UNLV, which finished its abbreviated 2020 campaign 0-6, is working to finish its first full spring camp under Arroyo. The Runnin' Rebels are scheduled to open their 2021 season Sept. 2 at home against FCS power Eastern Washington before traveling to Arizona State on 9-11.
