UNLV moving quickly to nab former SEC coach Dan Mullen, seeking to finalize deal (Florida)

UNLV turned around its program with a former Southeastern Conference head coach.

Now, UNLV is poised to use a similar script for the future of its football program.

After hiring Barry Odom, the former Missouri head coach, to turn around its program two years ago, UNLV is working to finalize a deal with Dan Mullen now that Odom has taken over at Purdue.

Joe Arrigo reported Wednesday night that Mullen would become the Rebels's next head coach and that an "announcement is imminent."

Sources told FootballScoop Wednesday evening that the two sides were in deep discussions and working to finalize a deal but that it had not quite yet been completed.

A well-regarded offensive mind, Mullen was a decorated offensive coordinator and helped Urban Meyer win national championships before Mullen took over the Mississippi State program.

Mullen then was hired away from State to take over at Florida after the 2017 season.

However, Mullen could not sustain success atop the Gators program and was dismissed before the end of the 2021 season.

Since that time, Mullen has worked as a national college football analyst for ESPN.

UNLV is coming off the most successful two-year stretch in program history, with 19 wins in its two seasons under Odom.

The Rebels are members of the Mountain West Conference.

Thursday AM Update> Sources tell FootballScoop this deal is now in place. Dan Mullen is head coach of the UNLV Rebels.
