Utah State's new defensive coordinator will reportedly come from 10-win program (New Mexico State)

Back in December, Utah State head coach Blake Anderson made a change on defense and parted ways with defensive coordinator Joe Cauthen.

The program is now set to add a defensive coordinator from a 10-win program, according to a report late last night.

Nate Dreiling, who served as Jerry Kill's defensive coordinator the last two seasons, is set to become the new defensive play caller on Anderson's staff, Pete Thamel has shared.

The past two seasons in Las Cruces have been the best in school history, and Dreiling's defense is a big reason why.

The Aggies won just their fourth bowl game in school history last year during a 7-6 campaign in their first year on campus, and followed that up with a remarkable 10-win season that included a blowout 31-10 win over Auburn late in the season.

Following the retirement of Kill, Drieling had added the associate head coach title with Tony Sanchez taking over the program.

A former standout at the Division II level at Pitt State (D-II - KS), Dreiling served as the defensive coordinator at his alma mater before leaving for a defensive analyst position on the Oregon staff for the 2020 season. He was back as a coordinator for the 2021 season as the defensive run game coordinator and inside linebackers coach at Southeast Missouri State before joining Kill in Las Cruces.

At Utah State, Dreiling will inherit a defense that finished near the bottom nationally in scoring defense at 123rd, and a run defense that was even worse at 129th nationally.
