UTEP has let go of both their offensive and defensive coordinators

UTEP has announced a change at both coordinator spots today.

Offensive coordinator Mike Canales and defensive coordinator Mike Cox have both been relieved of their duties.

"While this was a difficult decision to make, I felt this is the best decision of our program moving forward," Dana Dimel shared in the school's release.

Both Canales and Cox were members of head coach Dana Dimel's original staff hired in 2018. Cox previously coached at Kansas State with Dimel, where he worked with the linebackers, and Canales joined the staff after working with the quarterbacks at Tennessee for a season.

Now in his third season in El Paso, Dimel had a pair of 1-11 seasons in his first two years, and this year they went 3-5. He previously spend a number of years at Kansas State under Bill Snyder as the offensive coordinator while also working with running backs and tight ends from 2009-17. Dimel has prior head coaching stops at Wyoming (1997-99) where he went 22-13 and Houston (2000-2002) where he went 8-26.

Dimel will now be looking for a new spark on both sides of the ball heading into a critical year four with the program.
