UTRGV adds former TCU strength coach Don Sommer to football staff (Gary Patterson)

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has hired one of college football's most experienced strength coaches to help launch its football program.

The Vaqueros are set to begin play in August 2025 as an FCS program, and former TCU head strength coach Don Summer -- a veteran of more than two decades in the industry -- has been tabbed by the school to head up the strength program.

Sommer most notably was Gary Patterson's right-hand man through their extended run together at TCU.

UTRGV, which hired Travis Bush as its initial head coach late in 2022, will compete in the Western Athletic Conference in football when the program launches next year.

"Donnie is the best I've ever been around," Bush said in a statement released by UTRGV. "His resume speaks for itself. He produced some of the strongest teams in the nation while at TCU.

"Our vision for UTRGV football is aligned and he'll be the most important force behind the culture we build here in the Valley."
